3. OPERATING MACROPATH D![]() Working with MacroPath D is a very easy and friendly operation. All functions are described in the following paragraphs. 3.1. Start the MacroPath D Turn the MacroPath D Camera power supply ON(a green mark appears on the switch). Start the MacroPath D PC Panel by pressing to “I” on the switch on the back. Let Windows starts up, then double click on the MacroPath D icon on the desktop 3.2. Log in and Log out As a default, when the system is switched on, it is possible to log in as Viewer (user without password): select Viewer user and press LOGIN button. You need to be logged in as Administrator to use the main functions. Press Administrator button, insert the password (issued as a separate document inserted in the Operator Manual) Administrator is allowed to create new users (see chapter 3.7.2) “Service” Log-in is available for authorized personnel only. 3.3. Overview of the functions MacroPath D functions (5.0 version) are grouped in 4 areas: HOME, LIVE, EDIT and SETTINGS
The following screen is available only for MacroPath D complete software (but not for the Viewer)
3.3.1. Keyboard hot keys Some functions can also be done by pressing on the keyboard (see table below):
3.3.2. Multifunctional buttons There are multifunctional buttons marked with a red triangle on the bottom-right side in the icon. To choose the main function, just press the button-icon, To choose the multiple function keep pressed at least for 3 seconds to expand and select the function. Multifunctional buttons:
3.4. HOME area functions In HOME area it is possible to: 1. browse/search or hide on existing case using the relative icon; 2. find cases by using the search function. 3. delete, 4. present, 5. print, 6. tag cases. A case can be retrieved by inserting the either the name, the creation/last edited date, the creator/last editor or the tag, and then pressing “filter” button. Reset Search: press this icon to undo all previous modifications and see the cases list Print case: press this icon for a complete or partial printout of the case. Select the template and then the picture to print Present case: press this icon and the whole case (images, video and audio) is displayed Tag case: Press this button to insert a tag in a case Delete case: press this icon to delete a case. Double confirmation is requested to avoid errors. 3.5. LIVE area functions In Live area it is possible to create/retrieve a cases, acquire images, take a video and modify extra camera settings. 3.5.1. Create/retrieve Enter laboratory number by barcode reader or manually with keyboard to create or retrieve a patient file handle and save specimen images. When using manual entry, press the return key ![]() 3.5.2. Taking Image/Video/Audio Take the image of the specimen by zooming in/out with the foot pedal control until the desired area of interest is viewed, then press Snapshot button or Save on pedal control. Take video by pressing Rec Video button. Press again to stop recording Press Rec Audio button to take an audio file by Press again to stop the recording. 3.5.3. Thumbnails Saved images, videos and audio appear on the right of the screen (Thumbnails). 3.5.4. Camera extra settings To resize the image taken it is requires to set properly two parameters as follows: 1. Image Compression quality: the resolution of the image, 2. Image size: the dimension of the image. From these two parameters depends the size of the image file. The table below lists all possible combinations. Milestone suggests setting cameras to get compression quality “NORMAL” and resolution “MEDIUM 2”. As this is a good compromise between file size (disk consumption space) and quality of the image to report. Should images be used for publications (articles, papers etc), Milestone suggests to choose quality “SUPERFINE” and resolution “LARGE”.
ISO: Auto Exposure (Compulsory): select this option. DO NOT change the default value. White Balance: (Light Source Selection) During the installation it is NOT necessary to perform the white balance camera setting. The digital camera will auto-balance the white according to the light conditions where the MacroPATH–D has been positioned. Therefore user has to select the type of light source in the laboratory among these options, in order to perform the best color contrast:
3.6. EDIT area functions Single click on the desired picture, video or audio, or click on the EDIT button to enter the Annotation mode In the Annotation mode, it is possible to add text, measures, lines and sections to the picture, examine the tissue, record audio or directly print out. Select: click the “SELECT” button to use the mouse as a pointer, or to select every item to be modified. Once selected it is possible to move the item, modify: color line, color background (if present), color text (if present) and text size (if present) with the Multifunction Keypad Section name Section number Text and line color Background color Line thickness Text size Image rotation Labels enable/disable 3.6.1. Tools Sizing Click and keep the “Sizing” icon pressed with the mouse or the touch pen. The toolbar circled in red appears. Click on “Sizing line” icon to draw lines; the system calculates the length of the line. Click on “Sizing area” icon to draw an area on the specimen; the system calculates the area taken. Click on “Sizing free” icon to draw freehand lines; the system calculates the length of the line. Software needs to be calibrated when unit is installed and every time camera height changes. See chapter 3.7.5 for calibration procedures. Because MacroPath D auto-sizing tool is strictly related to the calibration done by the operator and is not controlled by the software of the unit, sample measurements obtained with MacroPath D are NOT TO BE CONSIDERED AS DIAGNOSTIC values. It is in fact necessary to position a ruler by the sample (see picture below) to use a caliper to get a diagnostic value of the tumor growth, lesion extension etc… Draw Lines Click onto the Lines icon with the mouse or the touch pen. Point and drag the desired line on the picture. Keep holding the button to activate the multiple choice of Squares, Circles, Arrows, Compass, lines or free end lines Add Texts The addition of text can be made by clicking or touching onto the “AbcText” icon, then pointing and dragging until the desired text box appears: release and enter desired text by the keyboard or bar code. PRESET CUSTOM TEXT: (see also chapter 3.7.9 to see how add preset texts) Once the list has been customized, click on the “AbcText” icon and keep it pressed until the list is displayed: chose the text required to enter it. Add Sections Click onto the Section icon with the mouse or the touch pen. Point and drag the desired line on the picture Keep holding the button thus activating the multiple choice of labeling styles (either A, 1, A-1 or 1-A). Modify the sequence of the letters and numbers by clicking with the pointer on the section line and then the relatives button on the multifunctional keypad. See the arrow to adjust the sequence of letters and numbers (see Multifunction keypad description in this chapter). Add multisections Click onto the Section icon with the mouse or the touch pen. Point and drag the desired sections on the picture Keep holding the button thus activating the multiple choice of section styles (4 or 6 quadrants). By press the section button line with the SELECT function, it is possible to deactivate labels and rotate sections. (see Multifunction keypad description in this chapter). Add footprint of cassettes Click onto the cassette icon with the mouse or the touch pen. Point the desired sections on the picture Keep holding the button thus activating the multiple choice of section styles (cassette or super mega cassette). Rotate the cassettes. (see Multifunction keypad description in this chapter). Zoom region Click onto the ZOOM icon with the mouse or the touch pen. Point and drug the desired zoom region on the picture: the software automatically creates the new cropped image Keep holding the button thus activating the multiple choice of section styles (zoom in, zoom out and zoom fit). Grid Click onto the GRID icon with the mouse or the touch pen to add a grid. In SETTINGS screen it is possible to modify color, thickness and spacing of lines. 3.6.2. Utility display Images and Videos Libraries Scroll UP/DOWN Press the button UP or DOWN to scroll up/down the libraries of images/videos/audio already taken. Play the Video Select a video scrolling the thumbnails on the left of the screen and click on it. Video will automatically start once selected. The Viewer screen appears and the video starts. At the end it is necessary to close the window to go back to the main screen. Play the Audio Click from the thumbnail of the library the audio to play: it automatically starts once selected. No windows appear. 3.6.3. Utility functions Undo & Redo Remove the last edit on the image: press the “Undo” button and the last entry on the screen disappears (cancellation is done from the last to the first edit). Press Redo button to restore a removed edit. Undo/Redo functions are not operational in case of images with edits already saved. Delete Press Delete icon to cancel the selected image. A deleted image cannot be retrieved later. Keep holding the button to open the windows where it is possible to delete images, video and audio. A message asks confirmation. It is also possible to delete images, video or audio by holding the related thumbnail Rec Audio Select the image to be added with an audio to comment. Take an audio file by pressing Rec Audio button and press again to stop the recording The saved audio icon appears on the right of the screen under the related image. Save image When all necessary edits have been made, click or touch on SAVE icon, as indicated, to save them. Images can also be saved by foot pedal by pressing the Save command. Anyway, if Exit to Live icon is pressed and edits have not been saved, the system warns if you wish to save them. 3.7. SETTINGS area functions Access and modification of settings is possible according to users access level (see chapter 3.7.2). Press SAVE and it restart the software to enable the changes Click on the Settings button, a pop-up screen will appear 3.7.1. General settings Click on General button and follow the instruction how to do a backup of application settings, user settings or full backup are displayed follow them. We recommend to export the backup file to another PC or hard disk. It is possible to modify icons, font and thumbs size by activating the “fine tuning mode” checkbox During the normal operating, it is possible to open the TUNING pressing the “PAUSE” button on the keyboard. 3.7.2. User settings Click on the User to create, modify or eliminate a user and/or change users rights. Enable or disable a right by checking or un-checking the related checkbox. At the end press “SAVE USER” and “SAVE”. Users’ rights tab le:
3.7.3. Licensing settings Click on Licensing button to manage the licensing file or to verify your licensing status. To obtain (in case after a problem, you are wished to receive a new license file): l Press “Copy to clipboard” button, to copy the Machine ID, l Paste in a text file or directly in the e-mail message, l Insert the Product Key printed on the Macropath CD l Describe the reason why it is necessary to have a new license l Send email to [email protected] l On receipt the reply mail save the file you received from Milestone customer support, l Press “Import file” and select the .lic5 file saved. l Restart Macropath and verify the licence level. MacroPath unit is provided with a fill icence file is already installed. 3.7.4. Storage settings Click on Storage button to either change or add new the storage folders (up to 3). The system automatically saves cases in each selected folder. Addition of a new path implies that: 1. All new cases are created into all path folders 2. Previous cases can be open only in VIEWER mode unless they are manually copied into the new folders. Selects sql server icon to save the cases in a local server 3.7.5. Camera settings Click on Camera button to modify camera settings. Select Cam 1 or Cam 2 if present. Click on Camera short name field to modify the name of the camera. Select: l Trust external calibration: Macropath D keeps the calibration factor from previous case l Force calibration so that MacroPath D requires to calibrate every image (useful if camera is moved before capturing the image). l Auto measure function not available. l Vertical Flip Image: vertical mirroring, l Horizontal Flip: horizontal mirroring l Priority: in case of two or more cameras connected to Macropath D, choose the selection sequence. Zoom mode: choose either Extended mode (default and recommended: 100% optical zoom) or standard mode (reduced optical zoom for optimal focus in special cases). Foot Pedal: enable foot pedal (if connected) by choosing the serial number in the list shown. Keypad: not enabled (for Macroview DM unit only) 3.7.6. Calibration Click the “Calibration procedure” button and position the ruler on the work surface. Press Focus if the image is not well focused and press Go Insert the distance (in mm) between the two edges of the image (see picture) Repeat the operation for different (7 times) zoom levels. At the end press Save. This calibration procedure is required whenever the position of the camera or the type of the lens are changed. Each camera has its calibration, then each camera must be calibrated independently of each other. 3.7.7. Third part settings It is possible to create a shortcut icon to recall an external software (up to 3 different external applications, not included): Select the External application checkbox. Insert name and address of the application and an icon image (optional) with its name. By thicking Shutdown Macropath after launch, at the starting of the external application, MacroPath D closes down. By thicking Disable Macropath after launch option, at the starting of the external application, MacroPath D is disabled. When “Disable Macropath after launch” box is selected, a dedicated program (not included, to be provided by the customer/final user) must also be installed to enable user to return to Macropath. On the contrary, return to Macropath is not possible and user will have to restart the application Macropath trough the red cross “CLOSE” of windows system. DO NOT thicking if not sure. Customization of the Exit button is also possible: add label name and icon path. Use MacroPath D camera and software as TWAIN devices of an external software (not included) is also possible: enable Install virtual driver and choose:
Tick Enable Twain acquisition to import images with an external imaging acquisition device (not included). 3.7.8. Localization settings From this screen it is possible to modify language (default language English), import new languages; system unit (millimeters and centimeters), time and date format. Preset custom text allows insertion of up to 100 different preset texts: press ADD (1 in the image below) and type the category name (example text 1), then press the second ADD (2 in the image below) icon and type the text (example text 1-a) The new added text can now be used in EDIT MODE 3.7.9. Appearance settings Open appearance screen and select a theme among those listed. Tick Fullscreen checkbox to disable the preset titlebar and fill with your laboratory name. 3.7.10. Tools settings Set here your favorite configuration for each tool like font, color etc. and have them as default for each case. In fact, it is also possible to change font, color and thickness of text and lines in Edit screen (see picture below), but these changes are valid just for the current case. Disable a single tool by unticking it. 3.7.11. Preferences settings A. Check the box to return to Live Mode when an image has been acquired and saved. B. Check to automatically enter in Edit Area after image acquisition C. Check to shutdown camera during Edit Area operations. This feature increases camera lifetime. D. By checking this box, every time you create a patient case, you will be required two times to enter the patient case name, thus avoiding misspelling and/or errors. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE CASE NUMBER AFTER THE ITS CREATION. E. It is the maximum audio recording time (maximum suggested 60 seconds) F. It is the maximum video recording time (maximum suggested 30 seconds) G. Set the time (in seconds) after which the camera turns in standby mode. This feature increases the camera lifetime H. Set delay time between each image in a presentation I. Press this button to cancel video settings. First time a video is taken, user will need to set quality (see 3.5.2 chapter). Watermark settings can be modified in Preferences screen: select None, Simple or Bordered. None Single: case name only Bordered: full information Bordered mode allows insertions of several information in the watermark. Uncheck data not required. In simple mode watermark is positioned over the image, while in bordered mode is put below it. 4. MACROPATH–D AS VIEWER MULTISTATIONS 4.1. MacroPath D as viewer multistation 4.1.1. How to install the MacroPath D as viewer MacroPATH–D as viewer allows simple retrieval of MacroPath D images, using either barcode or manual entry of patient identifying number. Images can only be viewed and printed (generating report as explained in the previous chapter), but no modifications i.e. annotations are possible. To carry out any modification on images (such as add notes, section and so on), an extra license of MacroPATH–D software must be available. For this, contact your local distributor. MacroPath D as viewer is the same software installed on the MacroPath D unit and it does not need a license. Therefore, user is authorized to install MacroPath D as Viewer software on any PC. For license activation see chapter 3.7.3 MacroPath D Viewer can be installed on any personal computer as follows: Use the MacroPath D CD and open the MacroPath D folder. Click on Set Up installer and follow the instructions to proceed with the installation of the MacroPath D software. 4.1.2. Settings MacroPath D Viewer PC Milestone strongly suggests that the following procedures are carried out by your local Network/IT Manager. Before proceeding with the instructions below, it is necessary to connect the MacroPath D PC and the MacroPath D as viewer PC to a local network, setting it with appropriate parameters. Settings the MacroPath D viewer PC: 1. Turn the MacroPath D viewer PC on. 2. Open the MacroPath D software 3. Click on “Settings” icon on the screen 4. In Storage field click on browse button 5. Select “My Network Places” folder, 6. Search the MacroPath D unit (the standard name of the PC is MACROPATH or MILESTONE, 7. Select the shared folder “IMAGES” then press OK 8. At the end, the full path is displayed (for example \\MACROPATH\images) It is now possible to work from both (or more) working stations. When a new case is added from histological laboratory, every additional station is able to view and print the same images. Milestone strongly suggests storing the cases on a server with an automated backup procedure.
