Like many Chinese poems, this poem is short, yet full of emotion. Without a word about autumn, the poet shows a vivid picture of a heartbroken traveler in the season. The first three lines consist of nine images. Most of them bring to mind life coming to an end and a bleak and chilly (蕭索的) scene, such as old trees, rotten vines, evening crows and the west wind. Just as Chinese poet Wang Guowei said in his Poetics in the World (《人間詞話》), “All scenic description involves expression of emotions (一切景語(yǔ)皆情語(yǔ)).” This scenery clearly shows the feelings of a lonely traveler.
