the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award

Two scientists, aircraft designer Gu Songfen and nuclear expert Wang Dazhong, won the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award on Wednesday for their outstanding contributions to scientific and technological innovation. Gu, born in 1930 in Jiangsu province, is a renowned aircraft designer. He was in charge of the aerodynamic design of the Shenyang JJ-1, the Nanchang CJ-6, and the Shenyang J-8 and J-8-II, laying the foundations of subsonic and supersonic aircraft design in the country. Wang, born in 1935 in Hebei province, is an internationally renowned nuclear energy scientist and educator. Wang has worked in nuclear energy technology for decades, presiding over the research, design, construction and operation of China's first 5 MW Low Temperature Nuclear Heating Reactor (NHR-5) and the nation's first 10 MW High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTR-10).

Double-digit growth

China's total imports and exports expanded 22.2 percent year-on-year to 31.67 trillion yuan in the first 10 months of 2021, official data showed last Sunday. The figure marked an increase of 23.4 percent from pre-epidemic levels in 2019, according to the General Administration of Customs. Both exports and imports continued double-digit growth in the first 10 months of the year, surging 22.5 and 21.8 percent from a year earlier, respectively. In October alone, the country's imports and exports rose 17.8 percent year-on-year, but 5.6 percent slower than September.

Highly transmissible

Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 250 million on Monday. Infections are still rising in 55 out of 240 countries and regions, with Russia, Ukraine and Greece at or near record levels of reported cases since the pandemic started. The daily average number of cases has fallen by 36 percent over the past three months, but the virus is still infecting 50 million people worldwide every 90 days due to the highly transmissible Delta variant.
