Acronyms for laughing can show when you were born

“Move over, ‘LOL’. You’re canceled,” says Gen Z. A new acronym for funny, “IJBOL”, has entered the room.

“I just burst out laughing” is what “IJBOL” stands for. It seems almost too specific, less usable than “LOL”, which means “laugh out loud”. But that’s why some people, like 25-year-old Ellie Jocson, appreciate it.

     “IJBOL”是“I just burst out laughing”的縮寫,表示“突然大笑”。

Jocson told The New York Times that she likes using “IJBOL” because it better reflects her experience while laughing “behind the screen”. “I’m usually just quiet and then I let out a snort(噴鼻息),” she said.

But haven’t we already got nice and specific laugh expressions with “ROFL” (“rolling on the floor laughing”) and “LMAO” (“laughing my ass off”)? They’re not cool enough for Gen Z it seems. “I don’t LMAO. It’s just not what I do,” said another Gen Zer, Michael Messineo. “I associate ‘LMAO’ with millennial (千禧一代) humor. But then I associate IJBOL with Gen Z humor, which is funnier,” he added.

“IJBOL” was actually around as early as 2009 but didn’t really become mainstream until recently. In 2021, the K-pop fan community started using it to describe some of their idols who laughed all the time. Then, several months ago, a trend started online of posting videos or images of someone bursting out laughing, and adding the IGBOL caption.
