“Let’s all pull on one rope”: that was the (German) motto that Markus Gringl had in mind when he offered his colleagues a beginners’ course in climbing. And once they got onto the indoor climbing wall, they soon realized that it was technique rather than muscles that would get them to the top.
“Norbert, André and Werner told me they were planning to attend a beginners’ climbing course,” Markus explains. “I happen to be a climbing instructor in my spare time. So I just offered to do the course for them.”
And how was it for the novices? “The ‘head stuff’ was the hardest,” says André Sippel. “Climbing takes a lot of mental strength, too. And when we climbed out in the open air at the end of the course, the sense of being exposed to Nature really was pretty special.”
It was an eye-opener for Werner Bestebner, too. “I’m an ice hockey goalie,” he explains, “but climbing is much harder work than keeping out that puck! And it’s so much more than muscle power alone.”
Norbert Allgäuer also found it a unique experience. “I play a few other sports – football, tennis, skiing and more,” he relates. “But none of them really helped me much here. Climbing’s all about a totally different kind of movement. But I love a sporting challenge, and that it definitely was!”
